Blondes vs. Brunettes #25 - The Real Deal #2

Wow, what a great weekend … bright sunshine, moderate temperatures, absolutely beautiful weather … just perfect for an outdoor pillow fight.

Yup, that’s right.

Too bad I missed it.

Seems that yesterday was International Pillow Fight Day and was celebrated throughout the world by men, women, boys & girls, pillow fighting.  A crowd of several hundred got into a pillow swingin’ donnybrook right here in our Nation’s Capital.

I had no idea any of this was going on until I saw it in the news today.  Had I only known, you can be sure I would have found a reason to go out and “buy a few bags of mulch”, and then proceed, camera in hand, directly to the Mall.

Now I have absolutely no idea if there were any blonde vs. brunette battles yesterday but I would imagine, just by the law of averages that there would have been.

Next year, perhaps.

Blondes vs. Brunettes Powderpuff football?  Keeps on drivin’ on, that’s for sure.

Decatur, Alabama had their game yesterday on International Pillow Fight Day (imagine the decisions that guys living in and around Decatur have to make:  “Do I swing a pillow today at some hot chick or do I watch blondes and brunettes pummel each other?”

Blondes, brunettes to battle it out for Alzheimer's fundraiser

The rivalry dates back more than a century. The battle began when organizers assigned the first women professional baseball players to teams based on hair color. With that 1875 decision, the blondes versus brunettes debate was born. On Saturday, 35 women, ages 21 to 50, will converge on Decatur to settle the dispute in the Alzheimer's Association's blondes versus brunettes flag football game. The game will take place at Cedar Ridge Middle School at 11 a.m. Although the common goal of raising awareness of Alzheimer's unites the women, expect a little trash talk.

"The blondes have big people who are fast, so we're taking the ‘slow and steady wins the race' approach," said brunette captain Mallory McCormack, of Athens. "Really, we're just going to outsmart them. It won't be very hard to outsmart some blondes."

"There have been barbs thrown back and forth. It's all in fun, but we do want to win," said Courtney White, blonde team captain. "It is a fun fundraiser and the real winner is the Alzheimer's Association."

A fundraiser for Alzheimer's Association chapters since 2005, the powder puff games have generated more than $3 million. Saturday's game marks the first blondes versus brunettes duel in north Alabama.

"Alabama is the football capital of the world. It was almost sacrilege not to have a blondes versus brunettes game here," said White, the Mid-South chapter's special events senior manager. Admission to the game is $10. The association hopes to raise $5,000 for education programs, presentations, research, national campaigns and the helpline.

"I love football, always have, but more importantly, my grandmother passed away last year from the disease. This is a way I can give back, play in her memory and raise awareness for a cause that has affected so many people," McCormack said. White hears the stories of desperation and heartache daily — feelings she also experienced when her grandmother died from Alzheimer's. "It is an awful disease with no cure. Many times I pick up the phone and before I can say, ‘Good afternoon, Alzheimer's Association,' they are already in tears. I cannot encourage people enough to go to support groups," White said. At the game, the association will provide materials and information about the Walk to End Alzheimer's scheduled for October at Delano Park.

Well, what with the good weather this weekend, and time spent outside, I didn’t really have the time to lay out my story from back in the late 1970s when my neighbor fought another girl.  We’ll just have to save it for another day.

But … that said, I know what you’re thinking:  where are the catfights?

So without further ado ….
